DIY At home Facial

by Ellen Jenkinson

Has your skin been stressing you out lately? Are you trying to understand its cycles, be it weather, mood, environment, diet, or other factors? Have you been working from home, or locked down, and feeling the need to look after your skin, just that little bit more? Maybe you just want to spend your Friday night in - and reset?
The question is, do you really need to spend hundreds of dollars at a skin clinic on the latest in technology? Only to be sold countless products that you don’t really want or need? Is it possible to do that with the products you already own at home?
If you’re looking to save some dollars and can carve out some time for yourself, here’s what we recommend. We believe beauty at home shouldn’t be hard, expensive, or deemed a luxury you don’t have - or shouldn’t make - time for.
Rather, we believe it’s now more important than ever to turn in, while the outside world continues to bring about feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. Taking care of your mental health is so important right now, and one way to do that is to try and slow things down and take some time for yourself. Enter: the DIY facial.
Of course you may not have the same vibe in your bathroom that you share with three housemates as your favourite spa or clinic does - and you not be able to perfectly recreate the sense of calm that comes from someone else massaging your face rather than yourself - but to be honest, we’ll take anything right now.
Here’s our tips for a DIY facial at home:
  1. Create a vibe. Candles. Music. Books. Tea. Wine. Comfy clothes. Tell anyone you live with that maybe they could just pop out for an hour, if they’d be so kind. Do you.
  2. Cleanse your skin well. Start with a fresh canvas.
  3. Exfoliate to smooth and brighten.
  4. Treat with a deeply hydrating mask.
  5. Steam to open pores.
  6. Moisturize and massage with a Face Oil and Gua Sha tool.
  7. Skip the extractions.
Why Cleanse? Throughout the day your face is naturally and continually subject to bacteria, pollutants & dirt. Cleansing facilitates the removal of such, including oil and other unwanted toxins. It primes your skin for the next steps.
Why Exfoliate? Exfoliation involves the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin using a blend of granular substances. Many chemical exfoliants use abrasive, stripping ingredients which provide temporary, immediate visceral effects, while exposing the skin to environmental influences which may cause further irritation. Stick to natural exfoliants that gently exfoliate and don’t leave your skin feeling red or raw.
Why Mask? A thick, hydrating, buttery mask applied across the face to nourish, smooth, and deeply hydrate will restore moisture levels to reveal dewy, plum, glowing skin.
Why Steam? Filling a bowl with hot water and positioning your face over the bowl with a towel over your head lets your skin 'open up' so your pores can be further cleansed from the steam. Throw in some lemon slices or a few drops of tea tree oil for extra points.
Why use a Face Oil? Face Oils have long been used as a practice supporting skin integrity while relieving skin conditions with their restorative, moisture-balancing properties. Whether you like patting the face oil into your skin or massaging thoroughly, it’s up to you.
Why use a Gua Sha Tool? A Gua Sha is a gentle facial scraping tool, used to release tension, stimulate blood flow, reduce inflammation and promote skin health and positive qi (energy). They can help Face Oils sink into the skin too. Simply hold the Gua Sha flat to the skin, under the eyes or over any redness, to soothe and de-puff. Use the curved side and work it over the skin, taking short strokes: down the neck to drain; in small horizontal strokes over the brow bone to lift; or hold and press upwards between the brows to release tension. To drain puffiness, work lightly, then more firmly to relax muscles.
What to avoid at home: while it’s probably the most tempting, extractions are best left to professionals - if not done correctly they can lead to scarring and worsen inflammation associated with breakouts.
Fluff’s Facial: Taking care of yourself has never been easier with this at home facial experience. We have taken four naturally nourishing products that give back to your skin restoring moisture levels and revealing a polished, fresh complexion.
Why this would work for you: developed for the individual self care ritual at home - covering the most important aspects of healthy skin: cleansing, exfoliation, and moisturisation.
How to use: Mix 1tsp -1tbsp with cleanser to achieve a wet, paste-like consistency. Apply to all areas of the face, focusing circular massage motions on the nose, forehead, and chin. Rinse and remove with a warm, wet wash cloth, and towel dry the face. Apply mask, leaving for 20 minutes (or sleeping in over night) before removing with a Wash Cloth. Apply a dropper’s worth of Face Oil #3 to the fingertips, pressing or massaging into the face, focusing on dehydrated areas. Perform fortnightly to monthly, as desired.
Suitable for: most skin types. Sensitive skin may find the small % of Frankincense, Ginger and Cinnamon to cause temporary redness - this is natural and the process of stimulation and circulation to the surface of the face.
With nourishing ingredients including: Slippery Elm, Rice Bran, Oatmeal, Sandalwood, Cacao, Ashwagandha, Marshmallow Root, Cinnamon, Ginger, and Chamomile, Hemp Seed Oil, Frankincense, Shea Butter, Aloe Vera, and Bakuchiol.
